Living in British Columbia sometimes makes you forget how lucky we are.
You spend your weekdays surrounded by traffic, schedules, emails, and everything moving quickly. Then one morning you pack a few things into the car, drive to the ferry terminal, and suddenly everything starts to slow down.
Bowen Island is not far away.
Actually, that's what makes it special.
You don't need to plan a major expedition. You don't need to disappear into the wilderness for a week. Sometimes a simple overnight trip is enough to remind yourself why we love living here.
A short ferry ride, and the city feels much further away than it really is.
This trip was never about chasing distance or checking another destination off a list.
It was just about getting outside.
Walking through the forest, cooking a simple meal, sitting near the water, and having time to enjoy the small things that are easy to miss during normal life.
That's something we've learned after years of exploring BC:
The best outdoor memories are rarely about the most expensive gear or the most complicated plans.
They're usually about simple moments.
A quiet trail.
A nice view.
A meal that somehow tastes better outside.
Bowen Island has a different feeling compared with many mountain destinations around Vancouver.
Places like Garibaldi or Elfin Lakes make you feel small because of their massive landscapes.
Bowen feels different.
It's calmer.
The trails, forests, and ocean views encourage you to slow down instead of rush.
You don't always need to reach the highest peak.
Sometimes wandering through the forest for a few hours is enough.
For overnight trips like this, we've learned that packing smarter matters much more than packing more.
Years ago, it was easy to bring too much.
Extra equipment.
Extra gadgets.
Things that seemed useful but never left the backpack.
Over time, you start understanding what actually matters.
A comfortable sleep setup.
Clothing that matches changing coastal weather.
A simple cooking system.
Enough water.
Reliable food.
Small things that make the trip easier.
The goal isn't to bring your entire home outdoors.
The goal is to bring enough comfort that you can enjoy being away from home.
One habit we always like is carrying a little more than the exact plan requires.
An extra meal.
An extra layer.
A little backup.
Not because we expect something to go wrong.
But because BC has a way of changing your plans.
Maybe the weather shifts.
Maybe you spend more time exploring.
Or maybe the evening is just too beautiful and you don't want the day to end yet.
Preparation is not always about emergencies.
Sometimes preparation simply creates freedom.
At the end of the trip, that's always the feeling we bring home.
Not the number of kilometres walked.
Not the gear used.
Not the perfect schedule.
Just the reminder that getting outside doesn't need to be complicated.
A small island.
A quiet forest.
A simple meal.
A weekend away.
Sometimes that's exactly enough.
